The Story of Virgil Abloh
Here, I am going to discuss (my favorite designer/creative director) Virgil Abloh, and his story!
I love all of his work and really look up to him!
Who is Virgil Abloh?
Virgil Abloh is a fashion designer and DJ born in America. He currently has the position of Artistic Director at Louis Vuitton for their men's wear collection. He is also the CEO of his fashion brand, based out of Milan, Off-White. He started his own brand in 2013 and has been a big name in fashion ever since; he also started at Louis Vuitton in 2018.
How did he get to the position he is at now?
He was born and raised right outside of Chicago, in Illinois. There his mother, who was a seamstress, taught him all he needed to know about that sort of field. He went to college at Wisconsin-Madison for engineering and architecture (this plays an important role in his fashion life later on) and graduated in 2002. It was then when he met his extremely close friend, Kanye West. They then began working together very soon after they met. A few years later, in 2009, Virgil and Kanye started interning at the Italian fashion house, Fendi. People have said, including Louis Vuitton CEO Michael Burke, that Abloh and West really left a positive imprint on the brand and brought, "A whole new vibe to the studio" (Michael Burke for Vogue). The first "big moment" in fashion for Virgil Abloh is when he and a bunch of his friends went to a Comme des Garçon show in 2009. Skipping forward a little bit, in 2012 he launched his first fashion brand, Pyrex, by taking Ralph Lauren flannels and branding them Pyrex with a "23" on it as a tribute to Michael Jordan. Scrapping this brand in 2013, he started the now extremely well know Off-White. He started this with the idea of finding a middle ground between streetwear and high fashion. Thus, naming the brand Off-White because as he said the brand is finding a place in between black and white, or "taking a classic silhouette to a fresh direction.

Moving forward with Off-White, in 2014 he released women's wear at Paris Fashion Week. This women's wear collection gained traction when Beyoncé wore an Off-White sweatshirt in the "Feeling Myself" video with Nicki Minaj. In 2016, Abloh opens his first store in the Aoyama area of Tokyo; here he debuted furniture for the first time as well. Then moving forward, 2017 was a huge year for Off-White. He collabed with iconic Japanese artist Takashi Murakami and then followed that up with a Nike collab that changed the sneaker game forever. This new silhouette of the Jordan 1 with his notorious zip-tag tied on the laces and print on the side, became one of the most coveted shoes ever.

Louis Vuitton Era:
The following year Kim Jones stepped down from his position as Creative/Artistic Director of men's wear at Louis Vuitton. Louis Vuitton a little bit later announced that Virgil Abloh would be filling the spot. His first collection premiered at the Men's Fashion Week in 2018 and was adored by the likes of the Kardashians, Takashi Murakami, Kanye, and so many other important people in the fashion world.
He is still working as the Artistic Director for men's wear at Louis Vuitton to this day

From his collection for Off-White to his collaborations with Ikea, Nike, and Murakami, Virgil Abloh is a master of many trades and has truly thrived in the fashion community. Abloh has had so many iconic creations and beautifully done pieces, it is absolutely incredible!
Virgil Abloh is my number one designer that I look up to and I hope that this article sparked your interest in him and his designs!
